is alum springs good for family photos??

Short answer.. YES!!

I get a lot of families asking about doing their photos at Alum Springs Park, and I love this location! But the time of day you choose can make a HUGE difference in how your photos turn out!

The biggest thing to know: lighting matters

Alum Springs is heavily surrounded by trees, which is part of what makes it so beautiful, but it can also make the lighting tricky.

I often have families request Alum Springs early in the morning, but unless we're going about an hour after sunrise, I typically wouldn't recommend it.

When the sun is high overhead, the light filtering through all of those trees can create strong green casts on your skin and patchy, unflattering light throughout the location. Basically, the gorgeous greenery that makes Alum Springs so pretty can also make photographing there a little more challenging.

My favorite time to photograph families at Alum Springs is around two hours before sunset!

At that time, the sun gets low enough to create gorgeous golden light that filters through the trees. Instead of fighting the forest canopy, we get to use it to our advantage.

And it's BEAUTIFUL.

What makes Alum Springs so good for family photos?

Once you get the lighting right, Alum Springs has so much variety for a family session.

You can find:

  • Beautiful wooded trails
  • An old bridge
  • A gorgeous creek
  • A soft green meadow tucked into the woods
  • A playground
  • Bathrooms
  • A dog-friendly environment

There are also plenty of opportunities for families to move, explore and actually interact with each other, instead of spending the entire session standing in one spot smiling at the camera.

That's one of my favorite things about this location.

Alum Springs is perfect for adventurous families

If your idea of family photos is everyone standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera for an hour....

Alum Springs might not be your favorite location.

But if you want to run around with your kids, explore a trail, play in the creek, walk across a bridge, cuddle up in the grass and just have fun together? Yes, 100x YES! I especially love Alum Springs for families who don't take their photos too seriously.

Your kids can be kids. You can play. You can laugh. You can get a little messy. We can chase each other down a trail and stop for the beautiful, quiet moments in between.

The goal isn't to make your family look perfect. It's to remember what this season of your life actually felt like.

Where is Alum Springs Park?

One of the other great things about Alum Springs is its location. It's not far from Central Park, Downtown Fredericksburg, or Southpoint Parkway, making it a convenient option for families who live around the Fredericksburg area.

And because there are so many different areas within the park, we can create a gallery that feels like we photographed in several different places without actually having to drive all over town.

So... is Alum Springs good for family photos?

Absolutely! at the right time of day.

For my photography style, I especially recommend Alum Springs for families who want something **fun, adventurous, candid and a little less traditional.**

If you're the kind of family who would rather have photos of your kids running through the woods, playing together, laughing, exploring and being themselves than standing perfectly posed for every photo... Alum Springs might be exactly what you're looking for.

And if you're considering it for your own family session, don't worry about knowing what to do in front of the camera. That's my job. I'll give you prompts and things to do together so you can focus on your people instead of wondering where you're supposed to put your hands.
