One of the most common questions I receive is, "What should we wear for our photo session?"
Wellll.. There isn't one perfect answer.
The best outfits are the ones that make you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself. When you feel good in what you're wearing, it shows in your photos. Whether you're planning family photos, a couples session, maternity photos, or a milestone session, these tips will help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully and stand the test of time.
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same white shirt and jeans.
Instead, focus on coordinating colors and textures that complement each other. Think of your outfits as pieces of the same story rather than identical uniforms.
A family might choose soft blues, creams, sage greens, and warm browns. A couple might pair a floral dress with a neutral button-down. The goal is for everyone's outfit to work together without looking overly planned.

One of my favorite things to photograph is color.
Soft pastels photograph beautifully, especially during spring and summer sessions. Rich jewel tones like emerald, rust, mustard, navy, and burgundy create depth and warmth during fall and winter. Fire truck red is my favorite all year round!
Fun, whimsical color is absolutely welcome. Just make sure the colors complement each other rather than compete for attention.
Many people think they should avoid patterns altogether, but that's not necessarily true.
Patterns can add personality and visual interest to your images when used thoughtfully. The key is choosing patterns that complement each other rather than clash.
If one family member is wearing a floral dress, consider pairing it with solids pulled from the colors in that pattern. Small florals, subtle stripes, and delicate textures tend to photograph beautifully.
Try to avoid large logos, neon colors, or extremely busy patterns that may distract from the people in the image.
Flowy dresses, skirts, cardigans, and layered pieces photograph beautifully because they add movement and dimension to your images.
This is especially true for maternity sessions and couples sessions. A dress that catches the breeze can create a soft, romantic feel that translates beautifully on camera.
Think about where your session is taking place.
A flowing dress may feel perfect in an open field at golden hour, while a cozy sweater and boots might feel more natural in a downtown setting during the fall.
Your location and wardrobe should feel connected and tell the same story.
A few small details can make a big difference:
- Steam or iron your clothing beforehand.
- Remove hair ties from your wrists.
- Empty bulky items from your pockets.
- Choose comfortable shoes whenever possible.
- Avoid large logos and graphics.
These little touches help create a polished final gallery.
Wear something that feels like you.
The goal isn't perfection. The goal is creating photographs that feel authentic to this season of your life.
Whether that's your toddler showing up with sticky hands, your partner making you laugh, or the anticipation of meeting your baby for the first time, those moments matter far more than having the "perfect" outfit.
Your photos should feel like the moment felt, and the right wardrobe simply helps tell that story.
If you're still unsure what to wear, don't worry. Every Row & Co Photography client receives guidance before their session, and I'm always happy to help you put outfits together.
